16th Rapid.Tech + FabCon 3.D at a glance

Rapid.Tech + FabCon 3.D returns to "capital of 3D printing" Erfurt for its 16th year from 25 to 27 June 2019

(Erfurt, 25 June 2019). The 16th Rapid.Tech + FabCon 3.D begins today in Erfurt. The additive technologies event expects to welcome a total of 175 exhibitors, who will showcase their services across a total of 2,633m² of exhibition space between 25 and 27 June 2019. Over 100 speakers from 13 nations will present the latest developments, technologies and standards in 3D printing.

Having celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2018, the event is back for a 16th run with a new and improved formula. New exhibition and conference topics, along with a range of enhanced networking opportunities, provide visitors and additive manufacturing companies with even more space and opportunity to make a success of the trade fair. This year, Rapid.Tech + FabCon 3.D is boosting its credentials as a triple threat, focussing on conference, exhibition and networking. "For the first time, our communications mix includes a trade fair TV studio, provided by link instinct. Exhibitors will be able to present their product innovations here by means of short interviews or pitches, and quickly get into conversation with prospective clients. The studio is at the heart of our newly-created 'Additive Area'. This area is right in the middle of the hall and is a meeting point for exhibitors and visitors, providing information and facilitating communication," says Michael Kynast, CEO of Messe Erfurt GmbH, describing key features of the new concept.

Enhanced networking also includes a new event app. Anyone who wants to can plan and customise their visit to Rapid.Tech + FabCon 3.D and will receive updates throughout the event. The app can be downloaded from Google Play or the App Store under "Rapid.Tech".

On all three days, the 3D printing community will get together at the 3D Printing Conference, where amongst other things, the open forum at the centre of the exhibition will be hosting an introductory course for recent entrants to AM.

It will also provide information on education and training opportunities, for example in-service training at Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences to become an Application Engineer for Additive Processes/Rapid Technologies, and VDI Additive Manufacturing Specialist Engineer certification devised primarily by the VDI Knowledge Forum. The new Education Forum will present examples of how 3D printing is being integrated into schools and vocational and higher education. There will also be updates from the start-up community and the creative industries, who will present the latest developments including the use of 3D printing in architecture, construction, art, transport, medicine, sustainability, digital industries, design and fashion.

Innovative ideas in these areas will be recognised by the international 3D Pioneers Challenge. The competition, which is in its fourth year, is aimed at experts from around the globe who can think outside the box. This year's prize of EUR 35,000 is donated by the Thuringian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society (TMWWDG). The Start-Up Award will also be presented once again. The final will see exciting pitches from eight young international companies competing to be crowned Start Up of the Year, with a total of EUR 14,000 in prize money on offer. Participants will present processes including the first 3D printing of glass, and new 3D printing media such as a stone material to be used primarily in architecture. The public Start-Up Pitch and the award ceremony will take place at the 3D Printing Conference on 25 June 2019.

The specialist conference will be focusing on the ongoing industrialization of additive manufacturing. AM experts will discuss developments, trends and applications in 14 industry- and technology-specific forums. New to the programme this year are the Software & Processes, Plastics and Standardization & Occupational Safety Forums. Alongside these the programme once again includes the established Automotive Industry, Aviation, Medical, Dental and Orthopaedic Technology, Contract Additive Manufacturing, 3D-Printed Electronics & Functions, Design, Metals, Legal, Tool, Mould and Fixture making Forums, an event hosted by the Fraunhofer Additive Manufacturing Alliance GENERATIV, and the two-day AM Science Forum.

The opening speeches on all three days will be delivered by highly regarded keynote speakers. The opening address on the first day (25 June 2019) will be given by Dr. Majeed Rana, Chief Physician and Vice Director of the Department of Oral, Maxillofacial and Plastic Facial Surgery at Düsseldorf University Hospital. He will discuss the use of computer-assisted surgery in the microvascular reconstruction of facial bones. The second day (26 June 2019) will begin with a keynote from the perspective of an industrial user. Speaker Ulli Klenk heads up additive manufacturing technology and hardware at Siemens Power Generation Services. His address will focus on the industrialisation of existing additive manufacturing processes and the development of new ones. Additive manufacturing's future role in spacecraft propulsion will be the subject of the keynote by Dr. Steffen Beyer from the Ariane Group on June 27, 2019. The materials specialist is Head of Production Technology - Materials and Processes in the Airbus subsidiary's rocket launcher division. He will explore the demands and challenges associated with the industrial production of high-performance spacecraft propulsion components.
