Anas Alkharboutli, a Syrian photographer working for dpa, has won the 27th Prix Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for War Correspondents' Young Reporter Trophy (Photo). His image of Kenana Yassin, a six-year-old girl receiving medical care after being injured in an airstrike in Idlib, is the first in his series, "The War in Syria", which won the award. The thirteen photographs show the lives of the people of Syria and their suffering during the civil war.

"As journalists, it is our job to keep directing the focus towards the civil war in Syria and other crisis areas," said dpa's Director of Photography Peer Grimm. "Anas Alkharboutli's work shows the importance of independent reporting from this region. As an international news agency, dpa does all that is possible to provide the media with extensive and reliable material from areas that are difficult to access. We are only able to do so thanks to courageous people like Anas Alkharboutli. We are very grateful to him for that."

Anas Alkharboutli, born in 1992, studied engineering at the University of Damascus. He began his career as a photojournalist in 2015 and soon became known for his sensitive images and videos of the Syrian civil war. Earlier this year, he was honoured for his work at the Pictures of the Year International (POYi).
