Barcelona, 16. September 2025: DHL Express hat heute seinen neuen internationalen Hub am Flughafen Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat eröffnet. Der Hub wurde in weniger als zwei Jahren mit einer Investition von 80 Millionen Euro fertiggestellt und ist darauf ausgelegt, das erhebliche Wachstum des internationalen Expressversandvolumens zu bewältigen, das das Unternehmen in den letzten Jahren verzeichnet hat.
DHL Express betreibt seit 1995 eigene Flugzeuge am Flughafen Barcelona, unterstützt aktiv den lokalen Export und bietet einen hochwertigen Service, der zu einem nachhaltigen Wachstum beigetragen hat. Der neue Hub ist eine wichtige Einrichtung für Import- und Exportaktivitäten und stärkt die Bedeutung Barcelonas für den internationalen Transport von DHL Express-Sendungen.

DHL Express verzeichnete in Barcelona innerhalb von nur fünf Jahren ein Wachstum von 30 %, was hauptsächlich auf den Anstieg des internationalen E-Commerce zurückzuführen ist. Auf dieses starke Wachstum folgten zwei Jahre der Stabilisierung inmitten einer weltweiten Abschwächung sowohl des internationalen Handels als auch des Online-Shoppings. Die neue Anlage ist darauf ausgelegt, mit einer langfristigen Vision auf diese Marktentwicklung zu reagieren: Sie ist so konzipiert, dass sie das prognostizierte Wachstum der nächsten 20 Jahre auffangen kann und sich an Veränderungen im Versandaufkommen anpasst, ohne den Betrieb zu stören. Darüber hinaus umfasst sie Lösungen, die die Umweltbelastung minimieren und damit den Nachhaltigkeitszielen der Gruppe entsprechen.
Der neue Hub wurde auf einem 29.000 m² großen Grundstück errichtet und verfügt über 10.000 m² Lagerfläche und 3.000 m² Bürofläche. Er soll internationale Flugrouten innerhalb Europas, Amerikas und Nordafrikas miteinander verbinden. Sein Ziel ist es, die internationale Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der mehr als 20.000 Unternehmen, mit denen DHL Express in Spanien zusammenarbeitet, weiter zu fördern, von denen über 20 % in Katalonien ansässig sind. Dieser Hub wird das gesamte katalanische Gebiet bedienen – einschließlich der vier Provinzen Barcelona, Lleida, Girona und Tarragona – sowie die Balearen und Andorra.

Der neue Hub in Barcelona ist ein Maßstab in Sachen Sicherheit und Nachhaltigkeit. Die DHL Express-Einrichtungen in El Prat können mehr als 20.000 Sendungen pro Stunde abfertigen, was einer siebenfachen Kapazitätssteigerung gegenüber dem bisherigen Betrieb entspricht. Sie umfassen auch eine Zollkontrolle, die eine individuelle Überwachung jedes einzelnen Pakets gewährleistet, und sind mit modernsten Röntgenlösungen ausgestattet, um maximale Sicherheit im Luftverkehr zu gewährleisten. Der Hub verfügt über 22 Lade- und 9 Entladestellen für Luftfrachtcontainer sowie 24 LKW-Rampen, von denen aus 120 Transporter die Lieferrouten und täglichen Abholungen abwickeln.
Jeden Tag führt DHL Express 10 Flüge aus seinem eigenen Luftverkehrsnetz am Flughafen Barcelona durch und nutzt zusätzlich 6 interkontinentale Flugverbindungen. Das Unternehmen plant außerdem, seinen Betrieb durch die Einbindung von zwei neuen Netzwerkflügen und die Verbesserung der interkontinentalen Anbindung durch kommerzielle Flüge zu erweitern.

Derzeit verfügt DHL Express Spanien über drei Hubs in Barcelona, Madrid und Vitoria, die als Verbindungen zum globalen Netzwerk des Unternehmens dienen, einschließlich internationaler Sendungen, die Spanien durchqueren. Darüber hinaus gibt es sechs Gateways für nationale Verbindungen in Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela, Sevilla, Valencia und den Kanarischen Inseln. DHL Express betreibt 16 eigene Flugzeuge, führt täglich mehr als 40 Flüge durch und bedient 26 Strecken.
Der neue DHL Express Hub in El Prat ist ein Meilenstein in Sachen betrieblicher Effizienz und wurde unter Berücksichtigung ökologischer Nachhaltigkeit gebaut. Die neuen Einrichtungen bieten den Mitarbeitern eine moderne, sichere und komfortable Umgebung. Darüber hinaus hat die Inbetriebnahme des Hubs zu einem Anstieg der qualifizierten Arbeitsplätze am Standort um mehr als 10 % geführt. Das neue Lager wurde im Einklang mit dem ehrgeizigen Ziel der DHL Group konzipiert, bis 2050 Netto-Null-Treibhausgasemissionen zu erreichen, mit dem Zwischenziel, den CO₂-Fußabdruck bis 2030 auf unter 29 Millionen Tonnen zu reduzieren. Bis zum selben Jahr strebt DHL an, 30 % seines Flugkraftstoffs aus nachhaltigen Quellen (SAF) zu beziehen. Derzeit hat die DHL Group bereits den höchsten Anteil an SAF-Nutzung in der Branche.
Der DHL Express International Hub in El Prat verfügt über eine Photovoltaikanlage für den Eigenverbrauch, und 37 Ladestationen für Lieferwagen und Flugzeug-Assistenzgeräte wurden bereits installiert. Die Infrastruktur ist für eine Erweiterung auf 100 % Kapazität vorinstalliert, sodass mindestens zwei Drittel der Fahrzeuge des Standorts emissionsfrei betrieben werden können. Zu den weiteren Maßnahmen gehören ein Grauwasser-Rückgewinnungssystem, Instrumente zur Kontrolle und Steuerung des täglichen Energieverbrauchs des Hubs sowie der Einsatz intelligenter LED-Beleuchtung mit automatischer Programmierung und Präsenzmeldern.
Die Einweihung des neuen internationalen Hubs am Flughafen Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat ist ein Meilenstein, der weiteren wichtigen Investitionen von DHL Spanien in Katalonien vorausgeht, darunter die für dieses Jahr geplante Eröffnung einer neuen Betriebsstätte in Girona. Das Unternehmen plant außerdem eine Investition von mehr als 40 Millionen Euro im Baskenland, genauer gesagt in Vitoria, um den zweitgrößten Flugzeugwartungshangar von DHL Express in Europa (nach Leipzig) zu errichten, der voraussichtlich 2027 in Betrieb genommen wird. Dies ist ein weiterer Schritt im Rahmen des kontinuierlichen Engagements, das das deutsche Unternehmen seit Beginn seiner Tätigkeit in Spanien im Jahr 1979 gezeigt hat.

Barcelona, September 16, 2025: DHL Express today inaugurated its new international hub at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. Completed in less than two years with an investment of €80 million, the hub is designed to accommodate the significant growth in the volume of international express transport operations that the company has experienced in recent years.
DHL Express has been operating its own aircraft at Barcelona Airport since 1995, actively supporting local exports and providing high-quality service that has driven sustained growth. The new hub serves as an essential facility for both import and export operations, reinforcing Barcelona's significance in the international transport of DHL Express parcels.

DHL Express saw its activity in Barcelona grow by 30% in just five years, driven mainly by the rise of international e-commerce. This strong growth was followed by two years of stabilization amid a global slowdown in both international trade and online shopping. The new facility is designed to respond to this market evolution with a long-term vision: it is built to accommodate projected growth over the next 20 years, adapting to changes in shipment flows without disrupting operations. Additionally, it incorporates solutions that minimize environmental impact, aligning with the Group’s sustainability goals.
Built on a plot of 29,000 m², with 10,000 m² of warehouse space and 3,000 m² of offices, the new hub is designed to connect international air routes within Europe, America, and North Africa. Its objective is to continue promoting the international competitiveness of the more than 20,000 companies with which DHL Express works in Spain, over 20% of which are located in Catalonia. This hub will serve the entire Catalan territory—including the four provinces: Barcelona, Lleida, Girona, and Tarragona—as well as the Balearic Islands and Andorra.

The new Barcelona hub is a benchmark in safety and sustainability. The DHL Express facilities in El Prat can process more than 20,000 pieces per hour, representing a sevenfold increase in capacity compared to the previous operation. They also include customs control, ensuring individual monitoring of each package, and are equipped with state-of-the-art X-ray solutions to provide maximum security in air transport. The hub features 22 loading positions and 9 unloading positions for air containers, as well as 24 docks for trucks from which 120 vans operate to manage both delivery routes and daily collections.
Every day, DHL Express operates 10 flights from its own dedicated aviation network at Barcelona Airport and utilizes an additional 6 intercontinental commercial flight connections. The company also plans to expand its operations by incorporating two new network flights and enhancing intercontinental connectivity through commercial flights.

Currently, DHL Express Spain has three hubs located in Barcelona, Madrid, and Vitoria, which operate as connections with the company's global network, including international shipments that are transiting Spain. In addition to these, there are six gateways for national connections in Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Valencia, and the Canary Islands. The new DHL Express Hub in El Prat marks a milestone in operational efficiency and is built with environmental sustainability as a priority. The new facilities provide employees with a modern, safe, and comfortable environment. Additionally, the launch of the hub has resulted in an increase of more than 10% in qualified jobs at the site. The new warehouse has been designed to align with DHL Group's ambitious goal of reaching net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, with an intermediate target of reducing its CO₂ footprint to below 29 million tonnes by 2030. By that same year, DHL aims for 30% of its aviation fuel to be sustainable (SAF). Currently, DHL Group already has the highest percentage of SAF usage in the industry.
The DHL Express International Hub in El Prat features a photovoltaic energy installation for self-consumption, and 37 electric chargers for delivery vans and aircraft assistance equipment have already been installed. The infrastructure is pre-installed to expand to 100% capacity, ensuring that at least two thirds of the site’s vehicles are operating GHG emission-free. Additional measures include a greywater recovery system, tools for controlling and managing the hub's daily energy consumption, and the use of intelligent LED lighting with automatic programming and presence sensors.
The inauguration of the new international hub at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport is a milestone that precedes other important investments that DHL Spain is undertaking in Catalonia, including the opening of a new operational facility in Girona planned for this year. The company has also planned an investment of more than €40 million in the Basque Country, specifically in Vitoria, to create what will be the second-largest DHL Express aircraft maintenance hangar in Europe (after Leipzig), expected to be operational in 2027. This represents a new step in the ongoing commitment that the German company has made to Spain since it began operations in the country in 1979.
