Fight against Product Piracy: Capture Fingerprint of Luxury Goods and check at any Time via App

Origify from Bosch enables authenticity checks and transparent supply chains

Stuttgart, September 26th 2023 – Watches, jewelry, handbags or fine accessories: Many brands worldwide are affected by product piracy. Organized counterfeiting gangs put counterfeits into circulation, thereby causing considerable damage to the economy, violating intellectual property rights and potentially endangering the health and safety of consumers. For decades, brand manufacturers have been working on proprietary solutions such as hologram seals or NFC chips to curb the economic damage caused by counterfeiting. However, a real breakthrough with seamless product protection has hardly been achieved so far. With Origify, Bosch offers a solution that detects luxury products along the entire product lifecycle using a product-specific optical fingerprint. Origify works in three steps: Via a special camera in a dedicated Origify hardware module, each individual product is captured with one or more images and digitally stored in a dedicated cloud with a data set that cannot be falsified or changed. Later, an app and a suitable smartphone can be used to check whether this product has been captured by the original manufacturer or is possibly counterfeited or falsified and requires further investigation.

Origify captures smallest features

"Every single product even in an industrially manufactured series – in the case of a watch, the dial or the movement; in the case of a handbag or shoes, the leather and surface structure – has unique features on its surface that are not repeated in the series and that we can capture with Origify," explains Oliver Steinbis, who is responsible for the project in the Bosch Group.

The data is automatically processed and stored by Origify in a tamper- and forgery-proof manner. The initial capture takes place at a manufacturer directly after production and can also be integrated into automated production. If a branded product has not already been recorded directly with production at the manufacturer, subsequent recording in service centers or repair shops can also be implemented. This applies in particular to the business models operated in the jewelry and watch industry by manufacturers, large jewelers or online retailers, such as "Certified Pre-Owned" or "Pre-Loved". Here, pre-owned luxury products are reworked and certified – and can also be recorded via Origify.

Undetected products are unmasked in seconds

The check, which is possible at any time, determines in just a few seconds whether a product with Origify has already been recorded by the manufacturer, a service or sales partner, or whether it needs to be examined more closely. The digital fingerprint of the product can be retrieved over the entire life cycle of the product, allowing brand manufacturers to identify it without a doubt as long as the product's surface structure is intact. By capturing a product and making it possible to identify it at a later date, manufacturers of high-value products are also provided with greater traceability. This makes it easier to identify gray market offerings and provides more transparency to the supply chain from the point of manufacture. Manufacturers can also actively involve customers in the solution – Origify's app functionalities can equally be made available in versions for end customers in selected countries or integrated into manufacturers' apps such as an online shopping app. "In extensive feasibility studies, we have already been able to prove the functionality for a wide range of luxury products – watches, jewelry, eyewear, shoes, leather goods and much more. Origify offers a reliable solution for capture, storage and subsequent verification that is available to brand manufacturers on a turnkey basis," describes Oliver Steinbis from Bosch.

About Origify

Bosch's Origify is a solution for authenticating and tracking a wide range of products and works invisibly without interfering with a product's design. A special camera system records selected unique features of a product that cannot be seen by the human eye, stores the data set in a tamper-proof cloud, and then enables verification for authenticity using a smartphone app. This requires no additional marking on the product - Origify automatically develops a digital fingerprint from the image data set. The solution can be integrated in production as well as at a point-of-sale or in service. In addition to the authenticity of their produced goods, companies can thus also assign products from the supply chain and detect possible deviations.
