Beate Uhse Group posting sharp increase in revenues and earnings
The Beate Uhse Group posted substantial revenue and earnings growth in the first three quarters of 2000. Revenues in the first nine months rose to DM 222.9 million, up some 35% over the year-ago period. Earnings before tax increased by a considerably higher rate of just under 45% to DM 19.2 million, up from DM 13.3 million in the same period one year earlier.
During the period under review, retail operations made a substantial contribution to earnings growth due to reorganization and the opening of new Beate Uhse Shops. Beate Uhse operates 50 shops directly, a further 56 through franchisees and 44 branches in Holland and Belgium through its subsidiary Sandereijn. In the Mail Order segment, preparations for relocating the European mail order center in the Netherlands at the beginning of 2001 were completed. In the Wholesale segment, the integration of Dutch subsidiary Scala unleashed substantial synergistic benefits, allowing the Company to consolidate its leadership of the wholesale adult entertainment market.
The portal strategy, which is allowing numerous synergistic benefits to be harnessed in the multimedia area, is playing a key role in the New Media segment. Underpinned by numerous new partnerships forged with such companies as Lycos, Spray.net and Tomorrow Internet, this strategy was continued in the period under review. Beate Uhse New Media will substantially broaden the range of B2B services in the near future. The Group's aim is to establish itself as the leading adult content provider in Germany.
