Press Invite – SYNERGISE project

Natural and man-made disaster zones: Research and development consortium SYNERGISE is conducting its first integrated System Field Test to evaluate innovative technological solutions including robots, drones, advanced sensors, localisation systems, wearable technologies and communication platforms in a realistic operational environment at the training field in Botkyrka, Sweden.

The international research and innovation project SYNERGISE is advancing to the next stage of testing innovative technological solutions designed to strengthen disaster response in both natural and man-made crises. SYNERGISE (A novel integrated SYstem of Systems streNgthening tEchnical and logistical capacities to ensure better Response to emerGencies by synergIStically addrEssing first responders’ capability gaps) brings together a wide range of tools and systems, including drones, robots, wearable technologies, geo-localisation devices, advanced communication systems, and AI-supported operational platforms. The project’s core mission is to improve first responder safety, enhance operational effectiveness, and support victim detection in highly demanding and complex emergency environments.

Following several successful component-based field tests, the project is now entering its first System Field Test. While previous tests evaluated individual technologies separately, the System Field Test focuses on the full integration and interoperability of all SYNERGISE technologies within one coordinated operational scenario.

The objective is to assess how the complete system-of-systems supports first responders in real-time emergency response situations under realistic field conditions. The scenarios simulate the aftermath of a major explosion causing building collapses, fires, disrupted transport networks, traffic accidents, and multiple trapped victims across different sectors. International USAR teams, firefighters, and incident commanders will work together under realistic disaster conditions to assess operational coordination, responder safety, and the interoperability of the SYNERGISE system-of-systems.

About SYNERGISE:

17 organisations from 11 countries are working together in the SYNERGISE project under the leadership of the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) to develop a system of systems that improves the safety, efficiency, and coordination of first responders while enhancing the ability to locate and assist missing persons. The responsible partners are collaborating across borders to advance disaster response capabilities worldwide. The project is jointly funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation, the Fukushima Institute for Research, Education and Innovation, the Korea Ministry of Science and ICT and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute of Korea (GA 101121321). It started on 1 September 2023 and will run until 28 February 2027.
