The multi sensorial installation „Haptic Hortus“ brings stories and experiences of encounters between plants and humans at the Botanical Gardens Berlin to a downtown site that holds complex histories of touch, too: a former nail salon right next to the urban gardening collective Prinzessinnengärten. „Haptic Hortus“, created by anthropologist, artist and IASS Fellow Susanne Schmitt, responds to the ethnographic research project „Touching Plants“ (FU Berlin).
During Science Week, the site-specific work will be activated through a sensory ethnography workshop with anthropologists Prof. Sandra Calkins and Cornelia Ertl, through a movement-oriented special edition of the experimental knowledge lab „Moving across Tresholds„, and a workshop with sound artist and composer Felix Classen where we explore acoustic hapticality and resounding contact making in a site shared by different forms of life.

Torfitz needs you. New ideas must be found for the community and the region so that the future becomes sustainable and worth living. As mayor, nurse, entrepreneur and student you consult together with which ideas this can be done. Everything at the same time is not possible. There will be discussions!
“Torfitz” was developed in 2022 in the IASS research group “Regional Sustainability Transformations” in cooperation with “Playing History”. Here is the opportunity to get to know the simulation game and play it together on site.

“Jatun Yacu” is the indigenous name, in Quechua language, for one of the tributaries of the Amazon river in Ecuador. As the Amazon river flows from its source to the Atlantic Ocean, it crosses four countries with different legal systems. This pilot documentary film traces the ebb and flow of rights in and of the Amazon across space and time, ethnographically exploring the question of what it means for a river to have rights, where these rights come from and what they might look like visually. It aims to show that while the notion of rights of nature may seem exotic to Western legal minds at first glance, a closer look reveals that the idea that non-human entities have rights is not new.
After the screening the public is invited for a open discussion on rights of nature and on the use of non traditional mediums of scientific production, with one of the movie directors, researcher Maria Cecilia Oliveira. She is project leader for the research group Democratic Governance for Ecopolitical Transformations (ECOPOL) at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) researching on climate change and democracy. At her work she explores possible bridges between science, aesthetics and ecopolitics.

What roles can scientists play in society?

As the climate crisis continues to escalate, the role of science and scientists’ engagement with society is being renegotiated. In this workshop, we examine the spectrum of different roles that scientists (can) take on. Open to members of the scientific community and the general public, the workshop will explore how scientists position themselves in the current moment, the tensions and concerns to which this gives rise, and the public’s expectations with regards to the role of scientists.

The Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) conducts research with the goal of identifying, advancing, and guiding transformation processes towards sustainable societies in Germany and abroad. Its research practice is transdisciplinary, transformative, and co-creative. The institute cooperates with partners in academia, political institutions, administrations, civil society, and the business community to understand sustainability challenges and generate potential solutions. A strong network of national and international partners supports the work of the institute. Among its central research topics are the energy transition, emerging technologies, climate change, air quality, systemic risks, governance and participation, and cultures of transformation. The IASS is funded by the research ministries of the Federal Government of Germany and the State of Brandenburg.
