The IASS at the Berlin Science Week

Press release

The IASS at the Berlin Science Week

The Berlin Science Week 2022 will be held from 1st till 10th November. Scientists from the IASS will be participating in these events:

Haptic Hortus

01.11.2022 - 06.11.2022

Time: 16:00

Touching Plants, or: How to Turn a derelict Nail Salon into a Botanical Garden for a Week

A sensory ethnography workshop - Hapticality as acoustic encounter

Tue | Nov 01, 2022 | 16:00 - 20:00 Berlin Time

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), SFB Affective Societies | Susanne Schmitt

The multi sensorial installation „Haptic Hortus“ brings stories and experiences of encounters between plants and humans at the Botanical Gardens Berlin to a downtown site that holds complex histories of touch, too: a former nail salon right next to the urban gardening collective Prinzessinnengärten. „Haptic Hortus“, created by anthropologist, artist and IASS Fellow Susanne Schmitt, responds to the ethnographic research project „Touching Plants“ (FU Berlin).

During Science Week, the site-specific work will be activated through a sensory ethnography workshop with anthropologists Prof. Sandra Calkins and Cornelia Ertl, through a movement-oriented special edition of the experimental knowledge lab „Moving across Tresholds„, and a workshop with sound artist and composer Felix Classen where we explore acoustic hapticality and resounding contact making in a site shared by different forms of life.

This is an in-person event. If you would like to attend, please register here.

Springer Nature Storytellers

Nov 01, 2022

Time: 19:00 PM

An evening of storytelling by researchers on the frontlines of discovery.

Tue | Nov 01, 2022 | 19:00 - 21:00 Berlin Time

Springer Nature | Florian Humpenöder, Azucena Morán, Zsolt Pinke, Josefine Proll

Join Springer Nature and partners at The Story Collider for a fun evening of stories told by researchers themselves. Inspirational, captivating, and definitely surprising, you will have an opportunity to hear about and connect with the experiences of experts on the cutting edge of their respective fields.

Among the storytellers is IASS-Researcher Azucena Morán. While researching a climate change general assembly, she realizes the process is not as perfect as she thought it would be.

If you would like to attend, please book your spot here.

Torfitz. The Game for Structural Change

Nov 04, 2022

Start time: 11:30 AM

Shape the structural change!

Fri | Nov 04, 2022 | 11:30 - 13:00 Berlin Time

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) | Victoria Luh, David Löw Beer

Torfitz needs you. New ideas must be found for the community and the region so that the future becomes sustainable and worth living. As mayor, nurse, entrepreneur and student you consult together with which ideas this can be done. Everything at the same time is not possible. There will be discussions!

“Torfitz” was developed in 2022 in the IASS research group “Regional Sustainability Transformations” in cooperation with “Playing History”. Here is the opportunity to get to know the simulation game and play it together on site.

This event will take place as part of the Berlin Science Week CAMPUS‘. Admission is free. Please reserve your one or two-day ticket here.

Please note: Pre-registration is requested for this event. Please send a short mail to victoria.luh(at)iass-potsdam.de to get a guaranteed place.

Information about the physical accessibility of the Museum für Naturkunde can be found here (see ‘experimental field’ for exact location on the map).

Jatun Yaku – Amazon of Rights

04.11.2022

Time: 14:00

When scientific research and documentary film zoom in on Rights of Nature

Fr | Nov 04, 2022 | 14:00 - 15:30 Berlin Time

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) | M. Cecilia Oliveira, Irem Couchouron, Juan Auz

“Jatun Yacu” is the indigenous name, in Quechua language, for one of the tributaries of the Amazon river in Ecuador. As the Amazon river flows from its source to the Atlantic Ocean, it crosses four countries with different legal systems. This pilot documentary film traces the ebb and flow of rights in and of the Amazon across space and time, ethnographically exploring the question of what it means for a river to have rights, where these rights come from and what they might look like visually. It aims to show that while the notion of rights of nature may seem exotic to Western legal minds at first glance, a closer look reveals that the idea that non-human entities have rights is not new.

After the screening the public is invited for a open discussion on rights of nature and on the use of non traditional mediums of scientific production, with one of the movie directors, researcher Maria Cecilia Oliveira. She is project leader for the research group Democratic Governance for Ecopolitical Transformations (ECOPOL) at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) researching on climate change and democracy. At her work she explores possible bridges between science, aesthetics and ecopolitics.

PUBLIC FILM SCREENING & TALK AT THE CAMPUS. PLEASE REGISTER.

This event will take place as part of the Berlin Science Week CAMPUS‚. Admission is free. Please reserve your one or two-day ticket here.

Dare to Act? Exploring the capacity of science to act

We | Nov. 09.11.2022 | 19:00 Berlin Time

What roles can scientists play in society?

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), Zentrum Technik und Gesellschaft, TU Berlin | Judith Pape, Josefa Kny

As the climate crisis continues to escalate, the role of science and scientists’ engagement with society is being renegotiated. In this workshop, we examine the spectrum of different roles that scientists (can) take on. Open to members of the scientific community and the general public, the workshop will explore how scientists position themselves in the current moment, the tensions and concerns to which this gives rise, and the public’s expectations with regards to the role of scientists.

PUBLIC WORKSHOP ON SITE AT EINS, TU BERLIN. PLEASE REGISTER.

This event will take place in person. If you would like to attend the event on-site, please register with Annabell Lamberth (ZTG). The event room is located on the first floor and is barrier-free.
