By setting up Splendid Television, LLC., New York, Splendid Medien AG, Cologne, has now also established a strong presence in the TV sector in addition to its cinema production activities. Following its first TV production "Victoria and Albert", the company has now strengthened its activities in this field. The latest project of Splendid Television is the television film entitled "James Dean".
Splendid Medien holds an 80 percent stake in the new subsidiary. Douglas Schwalbe, who has many years of experience in the TV business, is the other shareholder and Chief Executive Officer. Splendid is currently forecasting sales of around DM 12 million for its two first projects alone, namely "James Dean" and "Victoria and Albert".
The aim of Splendid Television is to co-produce, finance and distribute between four and five event television movies and mini-series every year. These will primarily be TV films and mini-series with large budgets, well-known actors and a story suitable for international marketing.
The latest project of Splendid, the television film "James Dean", is a co-production between Splendid Television and Five Mile River Films (Rowayton, Connecticut) produced for the TV network Turner Network Television (Los Angeles, California), a subsidiary of the Time Warner Company. Splendid will own the world-wide rights to "James Dean" outside North America, and the German and Italian rights will be held by Five Mile River Films.
The legendary film star James Dean is played by James Franco (Ungeküsst, Freaks & Geeks/NBC); the film is directed by Mark Rydell (Am goldenen See, Die Rose). The film is currently in the post-production phase.
Shooting of the already announced mini-series "Victoria & Albert" has started this week. Peter Ustinov has been signed up for this series. The world-wide TV premiere is expected to take place in the summer of 2001.
With Splendid Television, Splendid Medien AG acquires the world- wide and perpetual ownership of mainstream TV productions, and will thus further expand its world-wide film library.
