Splendid Film GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Splendid Medien AG, Cologne, is to acquire and market the world-wide perpetual rights for mainstream TV productions, and will thus extend its existing library (720 films) to include TV films and mini series.
Douglas J. Schwalbe is responsible for purchasing and world-wide distribution of the TV productions. Schwalbe has been in the TV business for more than 15 years, and has excellent contacts in the international media and film industry. He was formerly responsible for the world-wide distribution of films and TV programmes at the US media companies HBO (Home Box Office), Twentieth Century Fox and MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer).
The first TV project will be "Victoria & Albert", a two-part history series concerning the love story between Queen Victoria and her husband Albert. Splendid has acquired the world-wide marketing rights outside America and Great Britain, incl. online rights. Production of the mini series, which is an A&E Network original production to be produced by own2feet Productions, is due to start in the near future. The budget is over USD 9 million. The summer of 2001 has been set as the likely date for the TV premiere.
