Maximum agility for inner-city routes
SAF-HOLLAND presents the SAF Smart Steering Control – an intelligent steering axle solution for distribution and collection transports
With the SAF Smart Steering Control axle, SAF-HOLLAND significantly improves the agility of trailers for inner-city deliveries. The pre-assembled combination of a SAF INTRA axle and the VSE auxiliary steering unit facilitates integration into existing fleets, improves agility and lowers operating costs.
SAF-HOLLAND is expanding its portfolio with the new SAF Smart Steering Control – an intelligent steering axle solution that was developed specifically for the requirements of deliveries in densely populated urban environments. Combining the tried and tested SAF INTRA self-steering axle with the single-circuit auxiliary steering unit from VSE significantly improves the agility of trailers – both in forward and reverse travel. The solution will be supplied pre-assembled from a single source in the future and forms an essential part of the new service philosophy at SAF-HOLLAND.

Intelligent auxiliary steering for tight manoeuvres
The SAF Smart Steering Control significantly increases agility: Up to a speed of 25 km/h, the steering system actively supports manoeuvring and tight cornering. It allows the axle to function in a similar way to a forced-steering axle within the usual steering angles. This is based on a kingpin sensor that reliably transmits the steering angles and requires no additional installation space on the fifth wheel top plate. In addition to this, the angle sensor on the axle records the exact position.
Efficiency and reduced tire wear
With the optimised steering support, the axle significantly reduces the effort for executing tight inner-city manoeuvres – a crucial advantage in time-critical distribution and collection transports. At the same time, it noticeably reduces tire wear and fuel consumption, which in turn lowers operating costs for the long term. Despite the added performance, the system weight increases by only around 40 kg.
Complete system solution from a single source
The SAF Smart Steering Control is supplied fully pre-assembled, including all VSE components such as steering cylinders and sensors. Vehicle manufacturers and service providers benefit from reduced installation times, reduced complexity and significantly easier integration into existing fleets. The axle is available in various versions: with the SAF TIRE PILOT or different hanger brackets and cross members from the INTRA range.
For complex applications
The axle is ideal for tight corners and complex conditions, even on unpaved roads, such as in forestry, for municipal applications or at construction sites. With the INTRA IO version, the brake cylinders can be rotated upwards to protect them against damage and to additionally increase the ground clearance. This makes the SAF Smart Steering Control an intelligent auxiliary steering system for special requirements in distribution, collection and offroad applications.
