New Products/Company Information

Hamm (euro adhoc) - Hamm, December 14, 2010 - SMT Scharf AG (German Securities Code (WKN) 575198, ISIN DE0005751986), technology and world market leader for rail-bound railway systems for the mining sector, has developed a new drive unit. While the diesel engines for the locomotives which SMT Scharf currently produces offer 80 kW and more, the new unit is driven by a newly developed diesel engine which offers 25 kW power.

The new drive unit means that the company has added a product to its portfolio which functions as a shunting engine and which can travel on the entire rail network in a mine. In contrast, the so-called "shunting trolleys" previously used are connected to a stationary hydraulic or pneumatic supply. These supply lines mean that their movements are restricted. The opportunities for using the new unit thus include, in particular, loading and unloading work as well as the daily transportation of consumables for roadheading. Loads of up to around 12 tons can be transported depending on the road´s gradient.

The first new-type units are expected to be used by a Russian customer in the first quarter of 2011 after these have successfully been licensed. "We are very pleased that we have now successfully completed developing this product and that we have already received our first order for it from Russia. This is further proof for us that the Russian mining sector has returned to its former on-track growth, and that once again it ramps up its investments in transportation equipment," commented Dr. Friedrich Trautwein, SMT Scharf AG´s CEO.

Trautwein believes that Russia and China will be the primary markets for the new unit: "The engine´s flexibility and the broad range of areas in which it can be used offer new customers in these countries an excellent way to start using SMT Scharf´s rail-bound railway technology."

Company profile

The SMT Scharf group develops, builds and maintains transportation equipment for mining and tunneling. The main product area is rail-bound railways which are used all over the world, primarily in hard coal mines and underground mining for gold, platinum and other metals. They are used to transport material and personnel with working loads of up to 45 tons. Rail-bound railways are the only means of underground transport that can be used on branching lines to cope with inclines of more than 13 degrees. The SMT Scharf Group has its own companies in Germany, Poland, Great Britain, South Africa, China and Russia and additional dealerships. The railways that SMT Scharf develops are characterized in particular by their high-performance engines, great transport performance and low operating and maintenance costs. SMT Scharf records more than 80% of its revenue in high-growth foreign markets, such as Russia, China and South Africa. Business with spare parts and repairs accounts for around 40% of revenue. The entire market for underground transport technology comprises EUR 5 billion to EUR 7 billion per year according to the company´s estimates. SMT Scharf AG has been listed in the Prime Standard (Regulated Market) of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange since April 11, 2007.
