As a longstanding partner of the Deggendorf Institute of Technology, Einhell Germany AG has been supporting research at the university for over 15 years. Following the opening of the new research center "Modern Mobility (MoMo)" in Plattling/Germany last week, the tool manufacturer from Landau an der Isar believes that research projects into new energy storage solutions will also offer potential for unlocking innovations in the segment of cordless tools and garden equipment.

Making battery innovations possible

Landau an der Isar, October 15, 2020 - With its Power X-Change rechargeable battery platform, the product range of Einhell has seen a clear focus on battery-powered tools and garden equipment for a number of years now. In the process, the company is constantly evolving and refining rechargeable battery technology as the core element of the platform and optimizing it in line with the latest standards. This is also the reason why, right from the beginning, Einhell has been a major supporter and backer of the new research center "Modern Mobility" (MoMo) at the Deggendorf Institute of Technology in Plattling, which specializes primarily on the areas of electrochemistry, power electronics, and automation alongside two other main faculties.

The CTO of Einhell Germany AG, Dr. Markus Thannhuber, was invited to the speak as a panelist at the opening of the Technology Campus, where he had the opportunity to express his enthusiasm: "It is great that, in the form of MoMo, a brand new technology and research center is now being opened so close to home." He added that the combination of electrochemistry and power electronics in particular was ideal for Einhell, as constantly developing ever more potent and efficient batteries is one of the central challenges of rechargeable battery technology. "In 2019 we already managed to secure the market leadership for battery-powered garden equipment. However, in the world of DIY it is our goal to become a pioneer in the field of rechargeable battery technology. By taking part in research projects at the new research center, we are going to further strengthen our competence in this field and help to carry the full scope of rechargeable battery technology forward." Thannhuber also praised the fact that the strength of the Technology Campus would help boost the viability of region for the future and attract highly qualified new talent to regional companies.

Established partners, new projects

Einhell is particularly optimistic about the collaboration with Prof. Michael Sternad, the Scientific Director of the new research center, which is set to become even closer in the future. He has already been involved in battery research with Einhell in the past, for example in the work carried out on innovative Multi-Ah technology that allows battery life to be increased by more than 300% in comparison to conventional batteries.

Prof. Sternad also sees a great future in this research cooperation. "It is a real joy to be working with a longstanding and ever-innovative cooperation partner like Einhell Germany AG on developing and refining the key technology of lithium-ion batteries here in Lower Bavaria. Only through cooperation with local companies can research become a successful 'product' that ultimately leads to commercial success. The market numbers show us that our research strategy has been on the right track up to now."

As a third area of research, robotics is also an extremely interesting topic for Einhell. With the FREELEXO Robot Lawn Mower, which is also part of the Power X-Change rechargeable battery system, Einhell launched its first robot lawn mower in 2020. Through the cooperation with MoMo, the tool manufacturer from Landau/Germany is aiming to conduct industry-oriented research in this area as well and hopes to translate the resulting findings into series production.
