Ottobock strengthens its NeuroMobility business area

Special wheelchairs for children expand the portfolio and foster the holistic treatment approach

Ottobock, the global healthtech company, acquired the Dutch company Veldink4kids, a specialist in children's wheelchairs, in January 2022. With this targeted addition to the portfolio in the area of NeuroMobility, Ottobock will be able to provide children and young people with holistic mobility solutions in the future.

Veldink4kids focuses on high-quality, modern wheelchairs for children and young people aged 3 to 18. The company's mission is to provide young users the greatest degree of freedom in order to support their development in the best possible manner. When developing new products, Veldink4kids works closely with therapists to meet the individual needs of children, their parents and caregivers. In doing so, Veldink4kids focuses on a balance between design and functionality. Depending on the size and requirements of the child, each wheelchair is individually configured and can grow in width, depth and height with the child. Thanks to the wide variety of components, adjustment options and individual customisation, users are optimally supported to maintain or even regain functionality.

"The Veldink4kids portfolio complements our strategic NeuroMobility initiative at an important point. In the future, we will also be able to ensure holistic solutions for younger children as well as for children and adolescents suffering from neurological indications such as cerebral palsy and accompany our users from the very beginning," says Philipp Schulte-Noelle, CEO of Ottobock. Specifically, the Velking4kids portfolio fills the gap for children's wheelchairs in the age group of three to ten-year-olds who outgrow the Ottobock Kimba rehab buggy. Schulte-Noelle adds: "This underscores our claim to leadership in innovation and Patient Care – especially for the youngest members of our society.”

The Veldink4kids management team will remain with the company and accompany the future international expansion. “We are very much looking forward to introducing our products into more markets through Ottobock's global distribution network, making them accessible to even more children in Europe and beyond," states Arnold van Zuijlekom, Managing Director of Veldink4kids.

The NeuroMobility business area at Ottobock includes neuro-orthotics solutions as well as the rehabilitation and wheelchair business. By combining competences and services, Ottobock offers holistic solutions for patients with neurological indications. The interdisciplinary treatment approach focuses on the individual needs of users in order to make their everyday lives more mobile with a variety of assistive devices. These include, for example, the Exopulse Suit, an electrode suit that relieves spasticity with electrical impulses, the microprocessor-controlled C-Brace orthosis system and the Ottobock wheelchair portfolio.
