Berlin, Oct. 26, 2023 - The four-part Sky Original docu-series JUAN CARLOS - DOWNFALL OF THE KING, which celebrated its world premiere at the Cannes International Series Festival’s competition section in 2023, and which was named BEST DOCU-SERIES 2023 at the BERLIN TV SERIES FESTIVAL, as well as nominated twice for the German Television Award (for “Best Documentary Series” and “Best Editing/Montage Information/Documentary”) has received another award in Munich:
JUAN CARLOS – DOWNFALL OF THE KING has been awarded the Blue Panther TV & Streaming Award 2023 in the category of information/journalism. The award ceremony took place last night in Munich, where producer and co-author, Christian Beetz, personally received the award.
The jury comes to the conclusion “Producer and author Christian Beetz impressively and unflinchingly uncovers the web of intrigues, greed, and machinations surrounding Juan Carlos. With the help of archival footage and reenactments, friends, former employees, journalists, and former intelligence agents recount how the king gradually tarnished his reputation.”
“After the series has now been shown in over 35 countries, it is coming back to its place of origin, Germany. I am particularly pleased with this award – as it honors the excellent and diverse team behind the production. Without all the heart and soul and the cool nerves, the series would not have been possible. Thanks to the Blauer Panther for the award and for the lovely evening,” comments Christian Beetz.
JUAN CARLOS: DOWNFALL OF THE KING has attracted a wide range of media attention since its premiere in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The series has been sold to more than 35 countries. All four episodes of JUAN CARLOS: DOWNFALL OF THE KING can be watched on Sky and WOW in Germany and on SkyShowtime in other European countries. NBC Universal Global Distribution is handling world sales. The development of the project was supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.

Juan Carlos I has long been a globally celebrated Spanish hero. He leads his country out of Franco's dictatorship into a parliamentary monarchy and makes a decisive contribution to its transformation into a modern state in the middle of Europe. As a result, he is held in high esteem until he is forced to abdicate the throne and eventually flees into exile in Abu Dhabi in 2020.
The four-part investigative Sky Original docu-series follows the path of the former king from his enthronement until today, which is accompanied by countless affairs, greed for money, accusations of corruption and abuse of power of unimaginable proportions.
