Berlin, July 13, 2023 - The four-part Sky Original docu-series JUAN CARLOS: DOWNFALL OF THE KING, which celebrated its world premiere in competition at the Cannes International Series Festival CANNESERIES, was named BEST DOCU-SERIES 2023 at the BERLIN TV SERIES FESTIVAL.
The jury of TV SERIES FESTIVAL 2023 commends JUAN CARLOS: DOWNFALL OF THE KING “for its captivating storytelling and bold approach to the genre. The docu-series provides a gripping exploration into the life of Juan Carlos, offering a balanced perspective that avoids hagiography and embraces the qualities of a compelling film. With a wealth of exclusive and colorful testimonies, including one from his former mistress, combined with unexpected plot twists, this series stands out as a remarkable and thought-provoking portrayal of an extraordinary character - GREAT storytelling.”
The TV SERIES FESTIVAL featured a screening of the first two episodes of the high-end docu-series in the presence of producer and co-writer Christian Beetz, co-director Anne von Petersdorff and the team.
JUAN CARLOS: DOWNFALL OF THE KING has attracted a wide range of media attention since its premiere in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Portugal and Spain and has already enjoyed its first international successes. The production by gebrueder beetz Filmproduktion was met not only with positive reviews internationally, but also with a positive response in international distribution after the LA screenings. It will be shown in over 20 countries, including China and Israel. On Sky in England and Ireland, the docu-series starts on 18 July.

Juan Carlos I has long been a globally celebrated Spanish hero. He leads his country out of Franco's dictatorship into a parliamentary monarchy and makes a decisive contribution to its transformation into a modern state in the middle of Europe. As a result, he is held in high esteem until he is forced to abdicate the throne and eventually flees into exile in Abu Dhabi in 2020.
The four-part investigative Sky Original docu-series follows the path of the former king from his enthronement until today, which is accompanied by countless affairs, greed for money, accusations of corruption and abuse of power of unimaginable proportions.
All four episodes of JUAN CARLOS: DOWNFALL OF THE KING can be seen on Sky and WOW in Germany and on SkyShowtime in other European countries. NBC Universal Global Distribution is handling world sales.
