New AI platform makes debut at automatica
Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence presents munich_i
The Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM) of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) is exploring new directions with automatica, the leading international trade show for automation and robotics. At the 2020 edition of automatica, from December 8-11 2020, the MSRM will present a unique platform, entitled munich-i, to promote the exchange of ideas on artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. The goal is to bring together the world's leading experts and responsibly drive the development of these technologies.
How can AI-assisted work be made safer and more productive? How can we use robotics and AI today to meet current and future challenges in the areas of healthcare and mobility? And how might a responsible use of these new technologies look?
Munich-i, a new AI platform jointly developed by MSRM and Messe München, aims to answer these questions. For the automatica trade show, which will take place at Messe München in December 2020, MSRM has planned a wide-ranging program under the heading "intelligence empowering tomorrow". The honorary patron will be the Bavarian minister president Dr. Markus Söder.
High-tech summit: Innovations by the international AI elite
At the high-tech summit on the first day of the trade show (December 8), it will be all about cooperation and the interaction between human and artificial intelligence. Pioneers and visionaries from the industry will present their latest innovations, designed to contribute to the responsible technological transformation of society. The summit is aimed at corporate leaders and those responsible for production, research and development, technology and digital transformation.
The slate of invited speakers includes, among others, Prof. Oussama Khatib, Director of Stanford Robotics Lab at Stanford University, Prof. Carme Torras, Research Professor at Institut de Robòtica i Informàtica Industrial, Prof. Dieter Fox, Professor in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington and Dr. Reinhard Ploss, the CEO of Infineon Technologies AG.
AI.Society, Robothon and a robot driver's license
Along with the high-tech summit, munich_i will present other activities related to AI and robotics over the duration of the trade show from December 8-11 2020:
- AI.Society: In a 1000 square meter space, visitors will experience visionary AI initiatives by MSRM and selected start-ups, offering a look at tomorrow's reality in the worlds of healthcare, work and mobility.
- Robothon: Innovation requires a sense of responsibility, knowledge, courage and persistence: In a multi-day competition, the young international academic elite will demonstrate these skills while solving a challenge in robotics.
- Robot Driver's License: Here visitors can learn the basics about how people work with robots through a hands-on encounter.
TUM professors Alena Buyx and Sami Haddadin to lead munich_i
Prof. Alena Buyx, who holds the Chair for Ethics in Medicine and Health Technologies, and Prof. Sami Haddadin, Director of MSRM, will jointly lead the munich_i event.
They both see munich_i as an important contribution toward developing the high-tech region of Bavaria on the basis of ethical guidelines: "Artificial intelligence and robotics are on the verge of a technological quantum leap. The munich_i summit will present top international experts in research, technology and industry who make people the focus of their work, and will thus make a lasting impact on our future lives," says Prof. Haddadin.
Prof. Buyx adds: "Sooner or later, AI will permeate our everyday lives. It will also bring a number of important challenges, however. That's why it needs to be done the right way from an ethical standpoint. At TUM we are developing new approaches to build ethical and social considerations directly into the development path right from the start."
MSRM and automatica - an ideal partnership
For Falk Senger, the managing director of Messe München, automatica will gain greater social relevance through the new AI platform: "The premiere of munich_i opens up new thematic areas for automatica: We are jointly initiating the debate on the benefits of technology as a means of helping people in the fields of healthcare, work and mobility. With munich_i here in Munich, we are also bringing things together that belong together and ideally complement one another - on the one hand, automatica, as a driving force for AI and robotics and, on the other, MSRM as Europe's leading deep tech forge."

The Munich School of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MSRM) at the Technical University of Munich is an integrative research center. Its purpose is to research the fundamentals of robotics, perception and artificial intelligence in order to develop technological solutions in the fields of healthcare, work and mobility. This will include, for example, adaptive and networked robot assistants for the industry of the future, autonomous airborne and ground-based robot teams for future mobility, medical nanobots and robot assistants for autonomous living in old age.
Automatica is the world's leading marketplace for automated and smart production. It is the trendsetting event for companies from all sectors of industry and provides them with access to innovations, knowledge and trends with high business relevance. Automatica supports and structures the transformation of industrial production: from automated to autonomous production. Messe München GmbH and VDMA Robotics + Automation, conceptual sponsor of the trade fair, are behind the industry-driven concept of automatica. The fair usually takes place in Munich in June every two years. In 2020, due to the corona pandemic, automatica was moved to December 8-11.
