AVM Presents New Bluetooth Applications

Voice and Data over Bluetooth-Wireless ADSL over Bluetooth- Increased Wireless Range
AVM continues to expand its line of Bluetooth solutions. In addition to new products in the BlueFRITZ! family (see separate press release), the Berlin telecommunications specialist has devoted itself to increasing performance through software and hardware optimization. Now Bluetooth delivers both wireless ADSL and cordless telephony through a BlueFRITZ! access point. AVM's solution already supplies two key applications, ISDN over Bluetooth and wireless PC networking. BlueFRITZ! offers wide-ranging communication capabilities by supporting standardized Bluetooth profiles for ISDN, networking, serial-port and modem communication, and cordless telephony. Moreover, its advanced hardware design increases the wirelss range beyond the 100 meters previously attained. The new developments can be seen in action live at the AVM exhibit, Hall 13, Stand C48.
Bluetooth at Home: Phone, Surf, Fax, Share and Print
Bluetooth is increasingly becoming the universal wireless communication technology. In addition to websurfing, PC telefax, and networking, AVM presents two new applications at CeBIT, cordless telephony and printing. For cordless telephony, a BlueFRITZ! access point serves as the base station. Suitable telephones include all mobile phones and cordless handsets that support the Bluetooth Cordless Telephony Profile (CTP) or the Common ISDN Access Profile (CIP). Familiar convenience features of ISDN cordless telephony, such as caller ID, call forwarding and three-party calls, can all be used over Bluetooth as well. The Bluetooth printing profile HCRP (Hardcopy Cable Replacement Profile) paves the way for yet another Bluetooth application. The new Bluetooth capabilities are rounded out by the Headset profile. A Bluetooth headset can now be used to remote-control the computer by voice input, or for PC telephony and video conferencing. The PC can also play MP3 or other music files over the wireless headset, in real-time and with high fidelity.
Wireless ADSL over Bluetooth for Fast, Cable-Free Internet Access
At CeBIT AVM introduces the first access point to supply wireless ADSL and ISDN access to up to seven Bluetooth devices. With throughput of 723 kbit/s, Bluetooth provides ideal conditions for fast web-surfing over 768 kbit/s ADSL lines. In the Bluetooth network, ADSL data is transported using the PAN networking profile. This permits the use of IPComp data compression (RFC 2393), which increases the Bluetooth data rate to over one megabit per second. Not only PCs and notebooks, but also PDAs, video cameras and other Bluetooth devices can use the access point's ADSL connection. The PAN profile permits the use of IP or PPPoE, depending on the given application's requirements. Furthermore, Bluetooth devices that do not yet support the PAN profile-certain PDAs and palmtops, for example-can use the modem-based profile DUN to surf the web at ADSL speed.
Longer Range Through Advanced Transceiver Design
AVM's BlueFRITZ! transmits with Bluetooth Class 1 power, which yields a minimum line-of-sight range of 100 meters. In comparative tests by a number of computing magazines, AVM has consistently achieved top scores for range and throughput rates. The wireless range has now been significantly increased by a new advanced hardware design. An increased receiver sensitivity (by approximately 8 dB to 87-88 dBm) at constant transmitter power delivers noticeable improvement under difficult radio conditions-indoors for example-and permits longer free-field range. Improved receiver sensitivity with constant transmitter power-"don't talk louder, just listen better"-is an advanced engineering solution that offers users nothing but advantages.
Bluetooth SIG Acknowledges ISDN Profile CIP as Version 1.0
The Bluetooth ISDN profile CIP has been acknowledged as a fully valid Bluetooth standard by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, or "Bluetooth SIG". Accordingly, the manufacturers' consortium has raised the CIP profile to version number 1.0. All of AVM's BlueFRITZ! products support the standard CIP profile. The ISDN profile defines CAPI-based ISDN communication over Bluetooth wireless links. All ISDN processes and features on the B and D channels are supported. At its CeBIT stand, AVM demonstrates the capabilities of the Bluetooth profile CIP in wireless ISDN communication. The exhibit spotlights one and two-channel Internet access with data compression, color telefax communication, two-channel H.320 video telephony, and fixed-line SMS and MMS messaging over Bluetooth.
Bluetooth Tomorrow
The relatively young wireless technology has attained high acceptance, with over 1000 different Bluetooth products available. Bluetooth's current capabilities will increase still further in the near future with the creation of numerous new applications. With its position in network access and PC communication, AVM is set to play a major part in this development. In addition to new individual applications, the Berlin-based company expects the new Bluetooth 2.0 standard to be introduced in the coming year with a further bandwidth increase to 10 Mbit/s.
