  • The Koehler Group's climate targets are in line with the 1.5 degree target stipulated in the Paris Agreement
  • Confirmation of the path to climate-friendly corporate development
  • Targets have been revised and adapted in accordance with the Science Based Targets initiative

The Koehler Group's near-term climate targets were officially validated by the internationally recognized Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in May 2025. As part of a comprehensive review process, the SBTi has confirmed that the family business's emission reduction plans meet the initiative's strict science-based requirements. This makes the company one of the players that actively and measurably contribute to limiting global warming and is in line with the 1.5 degree target stipulated the Paris Agreement.

The SBTi is an independent organization that supports companies in developing science-based climate targets. "For us, the validation and recognition by the SBTi is clear proof that our strategic focus on climate protection is not only ambitious, but also scientifically sound and internationally recognized," said Dr. Stefan Karrer, Chief Technical Officer of the Koehler Group. This is an important step for us – not only for the environment, but also for transparency towards customers, investors and partners," added Sustainability Manager Jens Kriete.

New climate targets of the Koehler Group

During course of the validation, the Koehler Group revised its previous climate targets and adapted them to the requirements of SBTi in order to meet the scientific requirements. An adjustment of the targets was necessary, among other things, because the SBTi sets its own climate targets for some sectors, for example, for electricity generation. The Group's new target of reducing direct greenhouse gas emissions from its own electricity generation (Scope 1) by 80 percent per megawatt hour generated by 2030 in comparison with the base year, 2022, was confirmed. The additional target of reducing all remaining direct Scope-1 and indirect Scope-2 emissions by 80 percent in absolute terms within this period was also confirmed.

The Koehler Group also reduces greenhouse gas emissions outside its direct sphere of influence. The third SBTi-compliant goal is to reduce absolute emissions from the supply chain, Scope 3, by 25 percent by 2030. The Scope-3 categories of purchased goods and services, fuel and energy-related activities, upstream transports and the use of sold products are considered.

The official science-based target language for Koehler is:

Koehler Group commits to reduce scope 1 GHG emissions from electricity generation 80% per MWh by 2030 from a 2022 base year.* Koehler Group also commits to reduce all remaining absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 80% within the same timeframe.* Koehler Group further commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution and use of sold products 25% within the same timeframe.*

*The target boundary includes land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks.
