Subtitle: - Innovation Award for new “online diversion” module in operations control system - Prompt reaction to current traffic disruptions, real-time information for passengers - On-road test at Bavarian transportation provider DB Stadtverkehr

Karlsruhe (euro adhoc) - Karlsruhe, January 2010. They are a major nuisance in local public transportation: disruptions and diversions. Annoying to passengers, they cost transportation companies even more dearly in time and money. But now, init innovation in traffic systems AG provides a solution which not only spares passengers´ nerves but also the budgets of bus and railway operators. The "online diversion" module developed by the Karlsruhe-based telematics specialist enables transportation providers to react promptly to disruptions and generate diversions without loss of time. At the same time, init´s system ensures that passengers on board and at the stops are notified in real time of diversions and the resulting schedule modifications.

The init solution thus has crucial advantages over conventional control systems (Intermodal Transport Control Systems, ITCS). The latter can only define diversions in the planning systems ahead of time but not react to current disruptions. "As a striking innovative feature, init´s system consistently provides subsequent levels including vehicles and drivers with all necessary information," the ITCS expert panel of the Association of German Transportation Companies (VDV) stated and therefore presented init with the ITCS Innovation Award.

Practical solution for practical application

In particular, the expert panel praised the "strong practical relevance" of the "online diversion" module and its "potential direct benefits" for the customer. It starts in the operations control center, which now has a simple and convenient tool enabling it to intervene promptly in the flow of traffic and redirect it as best as possible. The solution also significantly facilitates the work of the drivers who now no longer need to navigate diversions "blindly" but are provided with information on route diversions and schedule adjustments straight on their on-board computers. They are also advised of dynamic schedule synchronization measures and — where equipped accordingly — navigated along the alternative route by means of a graphic user interface and acoustic instructions. This pragmatic solution is the result of close cooperation between init and a group of experienced staff at transportation companies in the "INIT Working Group ITCS", which was the driving force behind the module development.

The crucial advantage for passengers is prompt availability of correct information on actual departure times and the servicing of stops even where diversions are temporary. Ad hoc diversions and the information on schedule adjustments are automatically transferred to the real-time passenger information system and communicated via the connected media (bus stop and on-board displays, Internet, cell phone services, etc.).

Online diversion module for universal use

The "online diversion" module has already proven of value in practice. The upgraded init ITCS is currently used by urban transportation provider DB Stadtverkehr. The German Transportation Association, VDV, expects that further communal transportation providers in conurbations will soon follow suit. "The new module delivers critical added value to transportation companies and helps them handle daily challenges," the experts stated. COO Achim Becker thus rated the marketing opportunities of init´s innovation accordingly: "Each of our 400 projects worldwide helps us learn more, and we immediately use what we have learnt in innovations for our customers. Modules such as the online diversion can thus be used universally - in Bavaria as much as in Dubai or in Vancouver."
