Hidden fractures in the labour market
Not everyone feels the benefits when the German economy is doing well. Prof. Dr Hannah Illing is investigating how inequality arises in the labour market. She has taken up the post of Assistant Professor of ‘Economics, with a focus on regional inequality’ at the Mercator School of Management at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
“I’m interested in how inequalities arise in the labour market and what causes them. They often emerge in the wake of economic shocks,” says Assistant Professor Dr Hannah Illing. If workers lose their jobs in such situations, the personal costs are high. “Following a mass layoff, those affected must expect significant losses of income that can last for several years.” Numerous studies bear this out.
At the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), Hannah Illing will take a comparative look at labour markets in Europe. “In many studies, labour markets are usually examined separately according to destination and country of origin. However, if both perspectives are taken into account, a more complete picture emerges,” says the economist.“As I discovered in the Czech-German border region, the emigration of foreign workers does indeed represent a loss of knowledge for their country of origin,” explains Illing. In the host country – in this case Germany – local workers need not fear being displaced, provided the economic conditions are favourable. On the contrary: they may even benefit from positive labour demand effects. Furthermore, the 33-year-old economist analyses the nature of the gender pay gap and what factors determine whether a man or a woman is hired.
Hannah Illing studied economics at the Universities of Bamberg and Passau (2010–2017). After completing her PhD with the highest honours (2021), she has since been conducting research as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bonn, as a fellow at the Institute of Labour Economics (IZA), and as an associate at the Institute for Employment Research in Nuremberg. She has undertaken visiting fellowships at the Centre for Economic Research and Graduate Education – Economics Institute in the Czech Republic (2016), as well as at Boston University in the USA (2019) and the University of California, Berkeley (2024). Her research has received funding on several occasions through external grants and scholarships.
