Fraport Pressing Ahead with Sustainable Infrastructure: EU Supporting the GREENVOLT Project with €2.55 Million
New ground power units and charging points for climate-friendly mobility – Project reducing CO2 emissions and strengthening sustainable airport operations
Fraport AG has signed a grant agreement with the European Union to receive financial support for its “GREENVOLT” project, which is devoted to increasing the availability of ground power and installing charging infrastructure throughout the apron at Frankfurt Airport. The EU is supporting the planned measures by contributing 2.55 million euros of the total investment of 8.5 million euros. The work on them will be finished by the end of 2027.
Fraport is expanding the ground power supply at nine remote aircraft parking positions on the apron. When completed, it will enable crews to switch off their auxiliary power units (if weather conditions allow) and significantly reduce jet fuel consumption. The company is also installing 322 new electric vehicle charging points spread throughout the airport apron. Ground traffic services and other companies operating on the apron will benefit from efficient, environmentally friendly charging of their vehicles. Fraport is also installing a battery-based facility in the south of the airport that will store energy harvested from the photovoltaic system at Runway 18 West (for takeoffs only) and make it flexibly available.
Dr. Jennifer Berz, Fraport’s Vice President for Strategy & Sustainability, emphasizes that “with GREENVOLT, we’re sending a clear signal in support of sustainable innovation at Frankfurt Airport. We’re systematically investing in low-emission technologies to transform our infrastructure. In this way, we’re making an important contribution to achieving our climate targets and ensuring the future viability of aviation.”
GREENVOLT slashes CO2, pollutant and noise emissions and meets the prerequisites for continuing to migrate the ground vehicle fleet to electric drives. By deploying the funds from the EU-promoted Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) in this way, the airport operator is setting new standards of sustainable airport operation.
Group-wide climate protection target: net zero
The “Climate and Environment“ press kit contains comprehensive information on the Fraport Group’s decarbonization activities. The Fraport Group has pledged to achieve net zero status within Scopes 1 and 2 at all of its fully consolidated sites by 2045 at the latest. Attention is now being paid to all climatically relevant greenhouse gases instead of only to carbon dioxide. Net zero means greenhouse gas neutrality.
