KB Renewables Acquires Großenlüder Wind Farm From ABO Energy

KB Renewables GmbH recently acquired the Großenlüder (GLR I) wind farm, which is located close to the Germany city of Fulda in the State of Hesse, from ABO Energy GmbH & Co. KGaA. With this acquisition, the company continues to systematically pursue its strategic growth trajectory in the area of wind power. The project complements KB Renewables’ portfolio, which includes plans to build up the company’s wind power holdings to an installed capacity of one gigawatt by 2030. To achieve this, the company is both building its own projects and acquiring existing and planned wind farms.
A Wind Power Project With a Bright Future
The Großenlüder wind farm is located in what is known as the FD32 “Östlich des Strangelsbergs” designated priority area in the district of Fulda. The plan is to erect a Nordex N163 wind turbine with a capacity of 6.8 MW and a hub height of 164 meters there. The turbine is then expected to go online in mid-2027 and generate around 18 million KWh of environmentally friendly energy every year – enough for the average annual consumption of just under 11,000 people. In addition, the project should make it possible to avoid emissions of approximately 12,000 metric tons of CO₂ every year.
ABO Energy worked on the project’s development for several years, taking care of extensive environmental reviews, surveys, and permit processes that culminated in the project’s approval in accordance with the German Federal Immission Control Act at the end of 2024. This was then followed by a feed-in tariff contract being awarded in March 2025 after the corresponding auction.
Cooperation Key to Project’s Continuation
KB Renewables had already submitted an initial no-obligation bid for the project in November 2025. The wind farm was finally acquired in June 2026, so that KB Renewables is now taking over the remaining work needed to get it across the finish line. In addition, KB Renewables has also taken over and will continue with the special-purpose vehicle that was originally set up for the project, Abo 10 Windpark GmbH & Co. KG.

The two companies will continue to work closely together even after the acquisition in order to keep the project on track until it is commissioned.

Regional Value Creation and Strong Local Partnerships
A crucial success factor when it comes to this project is the ability to work closely together with all regional stakeholders. Both private landowners and the State of Hesse, in the form of HessenForst, are actively involved in the project’s details as a result of the areas being used for the required turbine sites, access roads, and collector system.
In addition, the economic impact resulting from the use of wind power should bring long-lasting benefits to the region. During the project’s development, residents were provided with comprehensive information and community co-investment opportunities. Moreover, the German Renewable Energy Act provides for profit sharing with surrounding municipalities.
As of this writing, preparation work for construction is underway, as are a number of species and nature conservation measures. Protected ant colonies are to be professionally relocated to suitable destinations in the coming weeks with the help of the project team and Ameisenschutzwarte, an organization dedicated to protecting native ant species. This serves as a small but impressive example of how nature conservation and our energy transition are absolutely compatible.
Looking Ahead: Potential for Expansion With Großenlüder II (GLR II)
The acquisition of GLR I also entails a look at possibly expanding the site. There is potential for up to four additional wind turbines with a total rated capacity of around 28 MW under project name GLR II.
KB Renewables will continue working on securing the necessary land rights and will update existing agreements and start initial implementation plans as needed.
