German craftsmanship is steeped in deep, rich history. While each region is known for its own cultural goods, such as the famed cuckoo clock, the golden city of Pforzheim is famous for its watch and jewellery making industry. Then as now, precious metals and their skilful processing play a vital role for the local economy. As a manufacturer of high-quality writing instruments, Black Forest-based company Otto Hutt carries on the region’s artisanal traditions. The brand’s products are distinguished as originals “Made in Germany” by combining exquisite materials, precise manufacturing techniques and functional design.

Bauhaus: When aesthetics and functionality go hand in hand

In the early 20th century, the Bauhaus style proved – once and for all – that fine arts and crafts were not mutually exclusive. By reconciling the two disciplines, an aesthetic emerged that is both tasteful and functional. Inspired by this revolutionary approach, company founder Otto Hutt applied it to the development of his own writing instruments in Pforzheim. While they ought to be stylish and precious accessories, they should also reliably fulfil their main purpose. Still to this day, the clear design lines lead to intuitive handling, which ensures a pleasant writing experience. More than a hundred years later, this design philosophy lies at the heart of the products created by the manufacturer of high-quality writing instruments.

Ever since then, the company has continued to develop and has gained a foothold in markets outside of Germany. The current production facility is located in neighbouring Königsbach-Stein. While the combination of craftsmanship and artful expertise is a central theme in product design, it is also reflected in the cross-disciplinary team. In close cooperation with various departments, experienced engineers and designers optimise the product lines and manufacturing methods. Processes such as the guilloche have been expanded to include a modern CNC-control. Simultaneously, many production steps are still carried out manually such as the grinding and polishing of precious gold nibs or the lacquering of surfaces.

Sustainability at the manufacturer of high-quality writing instruments

The “Made in Germany” seal offers guidance to consumers and is a guarantor for reliability and function. Therefore, the German Association of Jewellery and Watches places high demands on its bearers – Otto Hutt being one of them. The origin and quality of the manufactured products are the first and foremost key aspects. Selected materials such as silver, gold and platinum unite the various design lines made by the Black Forest brand. In order to fulfil high standards, each writing utensil undergoes a manual quality check after production. To ensure functionality and manageability, the manufacturer of high-quality writing instruments conducts a final writing test before shipping.

Further, sustainability plays an important role as a guiding principle. Among other things, the factory has an electroplating line that is wastewater-free and operated by a proprietary cogeneration unit. The use of plastics is avoided in both production and packaging. In order to keep transport emissions as low as possible, the company’s partners hail exclusively from the surrounding region or Germany. In addition, many accessories are made from sustainable materials, such as the vegetable-tanned cases made of cowhide.
