TÜV SÜD debuts at IAA Commercial Vehicles

TÜV SÜD will present its complete portfolio of services for the transport and logistics sectors for the first time at the 2012 IAA Commercial Vehicles, held from 20 to 27 September in Hanover. TÜV SÜD's appearance at the trade show, under the motto of "Think differently. Develop the future.", is part of the company's internationalization strategy for the commercial vehicle sector. Its experts have brought all services related to the industry together in the Truck Services Life Cycle, which will be launched this Wednesday. Other top themes include a current industry survey examining the degree of acceptance of energy efficiency and Logico, an integrated system which measures and documents diesel consumption - and thus carbon emissions - and also trains drivers in methods of saving fuel.

Bernhard Kerscher, CEO of TÜV SÜD Auto Service GmbH, comments, "By designing a portfolio of services tailored to the needs of the logistics industry, we are consolidating our status as a leading independent service provider in this field and will launch these services on an international platform for the first time at the IAA." To achieve this, in recent years TÜV SÜD's commercial-vehicle experts have restructured their business areas and focused all services related to commercial vehicles, from vehicle registration to damage assessment, load restraint and driver training, in TÜV SÜD Truck Services Life Cycle. This portfolio includes roadworthiness inspections and other inspection services which TÜV SÜD Auto Partner has successfully offered throughout Germany for the past two years, in addition to the full range of free market services, such as vehicle reconditioning and valuation, which are gathered centrally under the umbrella of TÜV SÜD Auto Plus GmbH.

TÜV SÜD's fleet management operations also offer a one-stop portfolio of services throughout Europe. The company's FleetCompany and FleetLogistics brands, which take care of 100,000 vehicles in Europe, make TÜV SÜD the largest provider of independent fleet management services in the region. Kerscher notes, "Fleet management is a key element that complements the Truck Services Life Cycle package.

All in all, our activities prove that we are ready to act as an industry partner with a wide array of services that span the entire truck life cycle - from leasing to valuation."

Efficiency and carbon emissions under control

Under its IAA motto, "Think differently. Develop the future." TÜV SÜD provides support for companies facing steadily rising fuel prices and increasingly rigorous environmental requirements such as carbon emission limits. The industry partner regards these areas as offering enormous potential for cost savings, given that diesel costs can account for up to 45 per cent of the total cost of ownership for a truck. Dieter Roth, Senior Project Manager Truck Services at TÜV SÜD, explains, "Saving fuel also means saving carbon, and drivers have an ever-growing role to play in this process. They can easily save up to two litres of fuel over 100 kilometres, which amounts to savings of a quarter of a million euros per year for a fleet of 50 trucks each with annual mileage of 150,000 kilometres. This benefits the company's finances, the environment and, not least, the company's image." The topic of energy efficiency is therefore also gaining in importance in the logistics industry: a recent representative study commissioned by TÜV SÜD showed that 76 per cent of stakeholders in the industry now consider energy efficiency to be one of the main criteria when purchasing new vehicles. The topic is also in the limelight in legal terms, given that all carbon emissions calculations are based on the European standard EN 16258 due to come into effect this year (publication date 4 December). The new standard will be the first to provide basic formulae and conversion values for energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions (well-to-wheel, tank-to-wheel) for pure transport processes, including allocation rules (vehicle, tonne- kilometre, pallet, person-kilometre) and recommendations for data sources.

Driving behaviour provides the greatest potential for savings

Logico already takes these new measurement requirements into consideration in its operations. The innovative system provides fleet operators with an online overview of all route parameters at all times. It enhances the digital vehicle file by adding the criteria of driving behaviour, consumption and carbon emissions and offers further benefits including recording all transport interfaces. Furthermore, Logico actually trains drivers while they are on the road, in a comprehensive and ongoing process which, as Kerscher explains, "extends far beyond other types of driver training and is significantly more effective because the lessons learnt become part of the driver's daily routine."
