Following official visits by the DiEM25 co-founder and MeRA25 Greece leader, Yanis Varoufakis, to Cuba and Mexico – which included meetings with Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard and other senior officials – the presidents of both countries have announced plans to organise a summit of progressive governments in the region.

The governments of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile, and Honduras will be invited to attend.

Speaking to Kawsachun News, Ebrard said: “President López Obrador suggested that communication and contact be established, and work be done to be able to meet the presidents of the progressive states of Latin America, to discuss food security issues, welfare issues, and other issues that are important for the community of our countries. We have to talk about this with other foreign ministers and move forward in the coming months, the coming weeks”.

The creation of a New Non-Aligned Movement, first called for by Varoufakis together with Jeremy Corbyn and Ece Temelkuran in Athens last year, was a central issue in Varoufakis’ visit to the Latin American countries, and is being discussed for the agenda of the proposed summit.

During Varoufakis’ meeting with López Obrador on 31 January – featuring discussions on the consequences of the new Cold War between the US and China, the war in Ukraine, the new wave of debt and poverty threatening the countries of the Global South, and the ongoing division of the world into dollar and yuan currency blocs – the Mexican president agreed on the need for a new international economic and monetary system that only an effective and radical New Non-Aligned Movement can promote.

It was also the central theme in Varoufakis’ speech at the Havana Congress for a New International Economic Order on 27 January.
