Debt for Climate! initiative lands in Munich for protests and actions ahead of G7 meeting

One document

Munich, 21.06.2022

As the heads of state of the G7 countries get ready to meet in Elmau, near Munich, at the end of June, the Debt for Climate! coalition will be present, organising protests and panels on the ground. Argentine activist Esteban Servat will present the initiative and its demands on June 23d at 7PM CEST at the EineWeltHaus in Munich. DiEM25 supports the campaign and invites all members of the public to join the event.

Debt for Climate! is a grassroots, Global South-driven initiative that seeks to pressure countries in the Global North to cancel the debt held by impoverished nations in order to fund the end of fossil fuel extraction. Alongside DiEM25, international ecological movements such as Extinction Rebellion and Fridays for Future also support the campaign.

Esteban Servat has been at the forefront of the resistance against fracking companies in Vaca Muerta, Argentina, where Germany's largest oil and gas company, Wintershall Dea, is one of the main culprits. He was forced to leave his home country due to death threats but has continued to be active in this and other environmental causes.

Servat says: "During the G7, we are bringing hundreds of thousands of people worldwide onto the streets and uniting climate struggles with social justice struggles and labour struggles. We unite activists of the Global South and Global North behind one goal: the end of the debt trap. Currently, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund maintain a neo-colonial relationship of exploitation that makes it impossible for countries of the Global South to stop destructive corporations like Wintershall. This must end. The Global North must pay its climate debts, which it is responsible for through its high CO2 emissions and extractivist environmental destruction. This can be done through debt cancellation. With debt cancellation, we will finance the energy transition in the Global South and ensure that trillions of euros worth of fossil fuels remain in the ground."

The event at the EineWeltHaus in Munich begins at 7 PM CEST on June 23.

Date & Time: Thursday, June 23 at 7 PM CEST

Location: EineWeltHaus in Munich (Schwanthalerstr. 80, 80336 Munich)
