Düsseldorf, Germany and Tokyo (ots-PRNewswire) - In cooperation with Lion Corporation, Tokyo, Japan, the Henkel Group, Duesseldorf, Germany, through its Japanese subsidiary, Henkel Japan, in a first step acquired all shares in Yamahatsu Sangyo K.K., Osaka, and its subsidiaries in Thailand and China. The establishment of a joint venture with Lion Corporation that will further develop and market Yamahatsu's haircare products and hair colorants is currently being discussed.
Yamahatsu Sangyo K.K. is mainly active in the hair colorants market. Well-known brand-name products supported by a wide distribution network as well as innovative research and development are major strengths of the company. Henkel, one of the worldwide leading hair cosmetics companies, will contribute its marketing know-how and its expertise from the hair salon business to the new company. Lion will support the cooperation with its profound market knowledge and its well-known distribution strength in the retail market.
In December 1999 Henkel and Lion agreed upon a cooperation in the fields of detergents, household cleaners as well as cosmetics/toiletries and oral and dental care in order to respond quickly and effectively to the growing challenges of the world markets. Henkel is the largest individual shareholder of Lion. For Henkel and Lion the acquisition is a further step in the cooperation between the two companies.
The acquisition of Yamahatsu Sangyo provides Henkel with an entry into the world's second largest hair cosmetics retail market. In addition to the strong market presence in Japan, the acquisition enables the future joint venture to expand established market positions in other Asian markets, as for example Thailand and China, and to open up new markets in the South East Asian region.
With 282 employees, Yamahatsu Sangyo K.K., founded in 1935, achieved sales of 75.5 million euro in 1999. With the brands "Paon", "Feminine" and "Fresh Light" the company is number 4 in the retail colorants market with a market share of approximately 10 percent. Together with the hair salon business of Yamahatsu Sangyo K.K. the very successful Schwarzkopf Professional business in Japan will attain a market share of more than 9 percent and thus become number 3 in the Japanese hair salon products market.
Henkel is a worldwide operating specialist in adhesives, brand-name products and in systems businesses with affiliates in over 70 countries. Henkel is the number one producer of Adhesives, Surface Technologies and Industrial and Institutional Hygiene (jointly with Ecolab Inc.) on a worldwide scale. In Detergents it ranks second in Continental Europe and in Cosmetics Henkel holds the number three position in Europe. Cognis, the recently carved-out chemicals business is the world's leading producer of Oleochemicals.
