World Press Photo Germany Premiere at the G+J Pressehaus in Hamburg

    Hamburg (ots)

Gruner + Jahr, STERN, GEO and the DEUTSCHE BAHN present the German premiere of the World Press Photo exhibition at the G+J Pressehaus in Hamburg from Apr 29 to May 23. Starting Jun15, the partners will also show the award-winning pictures in eight German railway stations – a first for the traveling exhibition.

Gruner + Jahr Chairman & CEO Dr. Bernd Kundrun comments on the World Press Photo 2004: "This year, we celebrate an anniversary of which we are particularly proud: This is the tenth time we are presenting the world’s most prestigious competition for press photography. As Europe’s biggest magazine publisher, we also stand for first-class photojournalism with our magazines STERN and GEO."

The World Press Photo of the year 2003 is a color photograph by the French photographer Jean-Marc Bouju. An international panel of judges selected it from the 63,093 images submitted for the contest. It shows an imprisoned Iraqi holding his four-year-old son in his arms in a collective camp for prisoners of war near Najaf (Iraq). Prizewinners also include the German photographer Horst Wackerbarth, who won an award for "The Red Couch", a work created for GEO magazine.

The exhibition of prizewinners not only provides concise documentation of last year’s world events, it also gives insight into current focuses in press photography. Alongside shocking and moving images from our planet’s areas of conflict, the exhibition also shows the other side of journalistic photography: fascinating close-ups, glimpses of strange worlds, and photographic highlights from culture, the arts, sports, environment and science.

    Dates: April 29 – May 23, 2004     G+J Pressehaus, Am Baumwall 11, D-20459 Hamburg, Germany     Opening hours:     Mon – Sun 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Wed 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.     Entrance is free.

Press photos are available for download at www.guj.de/press.
