Bring on the rain! Save drinking water with cordless pumps
Sustainable, better and free: “Rainwater is ideal for watering your garden. Not only does it ease the burden on drinking water supplies and your own wallet, it is also virtually lime-free and doesn't contain any added preservatives such as chlorine, fluorine or ozone, which in turn is good for plants,” says Michael Gröstenberger, Category Manager Garden at Einhell Germany AG. According to his calculations, “Given that we get an average of between 800 and 1000 liters of rainfall per square meter each year, that’s enough for us to water even larger gardens with rainwater all year round.”
Rain barrel or cistern?
Landau a. d. Isar, April 19th, 2022 – The simplest method of catching rainwater is to install a rain barrel below the downpipe of the gutter. Gröstenberger: “What’s important here is that the lid should always have a child-proof closure to protect against accidents. We also recommend suitable mosquito protection so that the rain barrel doesn’t become a breeding ground for those pests.”
Better, but of course also associated with greater installation expense, is a cistern sited underneath the lawn. “Water stores located below frost depth generally have a capacity of between 1500 and 9000 liters. The rainwater they hold can be used to water even larger gardens over a long period of time. That of course not only saves the amateur gardener money, but also protects the environment,” Gröstenberger adds.
To enable the water from the cistern or rain barrel to be used, it makes sense to install a garden or rain barrel pump. Mobile, battery-operated models are particularly handy, as they do not require a power source.
When it comes to pumps, it is essential to distinguish between surface and submersible pumps for clear and dirty water.
