Bonn, 21. Januar 2021: DHL Global Forwarding, der Luft- und Seefrachtspezialist von Deutsche Post DHL Group, erweitert seinen Life Sciences & Healthcare (LSH) Standort in Leipzig um rund 2.500 m². Der Standort, in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Leipziger Flughafen, verfügt über modernste Ausstattung zum Lagern und Umschlagen von temperaturgeführten Pharma- und Medizinprodukten wie etwa Impfstoffen. Nach Frankfurt am Main, ist Leipzig bereits der zweite Standort von DHL Global Forwarding, der in Bezug auf Kapazitäten und Ausstattung ausgebaut wird. Zudem hat DHL erneut erfolgreich die IATA CEIV Pharma Zertifizierung für seine GxP (Good Practice) Standorte in Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg und Leipzig erneuert. Damit ist das Unternehmen in Deutschland bestens für die Logistikanforderungen für den Im- und Export von Corona-Impfstoffen gerüstet.

„Seit Beginn der Pandemie, Anfang dieses Jahres, beobachten wir einen starken Anstieg der Nachfrage in Richtung pharmazeutischer Produkte und Waren. Mit den positiven Meldungen zum Stand der Entwicklung der Corona-Impfstoffe wird sich diese Nachfrage voraussichtlich zukünftig noch verstärken", erklärt Tobias Schmidt, CEO DHL Global Forwarding in Deutschland. „Deshalb haben wir uns schon früh auf dieses Szenario vorbereitet und haben alles arrangiert, um flexibel und hoch effizient reagieren zu können. Hierbei kommt uns natürlich auch zugute, dass DHL Global Forwarding Deutschland bereits sehr erfahren im Umgang und Transport temperaturgeführter, pharmazeutischer Sendungen ist. Wir verfügen über ein dichtes, hochmodernes Netzwerk, das alle strengen regulatorischen Anforderungen erfüllt."

Die bisherige Umschlags- und Lagerfläche von knapp 2.200 m² in Leipzig wurde mit Fertigstellung der Erweiterung im letzten Quartal 2020 mehr als verdoppelt. Das zweite Lagerhaus umfasst insgesamt über 2.500 m², die in zwei Temperaturzonen unterteilt sind. Im größeren Bereich von ca. 1.700 m² kann die Temperatur zwischen 15-25°C reguliert werden. Der kleinere Bereich von rund 850 m² kann auf 2-8°C heruntergekühlt werden. Somit können pharmazeutische Produkte entsprechend kühl zwischengelagert und ihre Integrität sichergestellt werden. Auch das Trockeneis-Handling für passiv gekühlte Transportbehälter und der Umgang mit aktiv gekühlten Transportcontainern gehören zum Standardrepertoire. Die unmittelbare Nähe zum Leipziger Flughafen stellt einen schnellen Im- und Export sicher. Natürlich bietet der Standort auch höchste Sicherheitsvorkehrungen, die sowohl Temperaturabweichungen und Feuer als auch Einbruch- oder Sabotageversuche sofort melden.

Die erneute IATA CEIV Pharma Zertifizierung zeigt, dass uns das auch gelingt und dass wir ein verlässlicher Partner für den Transport von strukturell komplexen sowie temperatursensiblen Arzneimitteln sind“, so Tobias Schmidt weiter.

DHL setzt sich gemeinsam mit der IATA dafür ein, den regulatorischen Anforderungen der Pharmaindustrie gerecht zu werden. Ein standardisierter Ansatz in der Luftfracht erhöht die Produktivität, Genauigkeit sowie Zuverlässigkeit und schafft die Voraussetzung, dass der Transport vorschriftsmäßig nach allen geltenden Richtlinien erfolgt. DHL begann bereits 2016 mit der CEIV-Pharma-Zertifizierung seiner weltweiten Standorte und legte so die Messlatte in der Pharmalogistik höher. Nach unabhängigen Audits durch Dritte und Schulungen für Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter vor Ort konnte die DHL GxP Standorte in Frankfurt, Hamburg und Leipzig das Gütesiegel erneuern. Auf diese Weise verbessert DHL Global Forwarding das Qualitätsniveau bei Beförderung und Lagerung von Pharmaprodukten und die DHL-Station übertrifft dabei ihre üblichen Qualitätsstandards. Die IATA prüft an jedem Standort, ob geforderte Standards wie die IATA Temperature Control Regulations (TCR) und die GDP (Good Distribution Practices)-Richtlinien der Europäischen Union sowie weitere Vorgaben der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) und sonstiger Aufsichtsbehörden eingehalten werden.

Als Marktführer in der Life-Sciences- und Healthcare-Branche bietet DHL seinen Mitarbeitern aller Ebenen und Funktionsbereiche weltweit wichtige Tools, um den Anforderungen sowohl der Kunden als auch der Aufsichtsbehörden gerecht zu werden. Das im Rahmen der Certified-Initiative angebotene Programm „Certified Life Sciences Specialist“ (CLSS) umfasst eine ganze Reihe von verpflichtenden Schulungen, Fachkursen und Materialien, mit denen das nötige Know-how für die hochspezialisierte Branche vermittelt wird. Wie bei allen temperaturgeführten Standorten von DHL haben alle Mitarbeiter in Frankfurt, Hamburg und Leipzig, die mit der Bearbeitung und Beförderung von Life-Sciences- und Healthcare-Produkten befasst sind, das Training erfolgreich durchlaufen und sind zertifizierte Life-Science-Specialists. So wird sichergestellt, dass sensible Sendungen mit größter Sorgfalt und unter Einhaltung aller geltenden Branchenstandards bearbeitet werden.

Bonn, January 21, 2020: DHL Global Forwarding, Deutsche Post DHL Group’s air and ocean freight specialist, has expanded its Life Sciences & Healthcare (LSH) facility in Leipzig by approximately 2,500 square meters. The center is very close to Leipzig Airport and houses state-of-the-art equipment for storing and handling temperature-controlled pharmaceutical and medical products, such as vaccinations. After Frankfurt am Main, Leipzig is the second DHL Global Forwarding facility to be expanded in terms of capacity and equipment. DHL has successfully achieved IATA CEIV Pharma recertification for its GxP (good practice) facilities in Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg and Leipzig, making the company ideally prepared in Germany to meet the logistical requirements related to importing and exporting Covid-19 vaccinations.

“Since the start of the pandemic, we have observed a strong increase in demand for pharmaceutical products and goods. Given the good news regarding the development of Covid-19 vaccinations, this demand is likely to increase even further in the coming months,” says Tobias Schmidt, CEO DHL Global Forwarding in Germany. “That is why we prepared for this scenario early on and put everything in place to be able to respond effectively and efficiently. Of course, we also benefit from the fact that DHL Global Forwarding Germany is already very experienced in handling and transporting temperature-controlled pharmaceutical shipments. We have a tight, state-of-the-art network that meets all the strict regulatory requirements in place.”

The previous transshipment and warehouse space of approximately 2,200 square meters in Leipzig was more than doubled when the expansion was completed in the last quarter of 2020. The second warehouse covers more than 2,500 square meters and is divided into two temperature zones. In the larger zone comprising approximately 1,700 square meters, the temperature can be regulated between 15 and 25°C. The smaller zone of around 850 square meters can be cooled down to 2-8°C. This allows pharmaceutical products to be stored at an appropriately cool temperature, to ensure their integrity. Dry ice handling for passively cooled transport containers and handling of actively cooled transport containers are also part of the standard repertoire. The immediate proximity to Leipzig Airport ensures fast import and export times. Of course, the facility also operates under the highest safety and security standards, with systems in place to immediately report temperature deviations and fire risks, as well as break-ins.

Our IATA CEIV Pharma recertification shows that our efforts are bearing fruit and we are a reliable partner for the shipment of structurally complex and temperature-sensitive drugs,” adds Schmidt.

DHL and IATA are jointly committed to ensuring that the pharmaceutical industries regulatory requirements are met. A standardized approach in air freight increases productivity, accuracy, and reliability, while enabling transport in compliance with all applicable regulations. DHL began IATA CEIV Pharma certification of its facilities worldwide in 2016, raising the bar in pharmaceutical logistics. After independent third-party audits and training courses for employees on site, the DHL GxP facilities in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Leipzig have successfully renewed the quality label. DHL Global Forwarding thus enhances transportation and storage quality levels of pharmaceutical goods, and the DHL station exceeds its usual quality standards. At each location, IATA verifies compliance with its Temperature Control Regulations (TCR), the European Union’s GDP (Good Distribution Practices) guidelines, and further requirements of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other regulatory bodies.
