"The strategic end to the atomic energy industry requires a new and clean alternative with regard to electricity generation. Renewable energy is equal to the challenge," says Frank H. Asbeck (Dipl.-Ing.), Chairman of the Management Board of SolarWorld AG. "The consensus reached with regard to atomic energy will further enhance the position of players within the market for renewable energy. Photovoltaics will play a pivotal role within this segment." SolarWorld AG has completed its third capital increase, placing 550,000 new shares. The net amount of capital generated, having deducted the costs associated with the capital increase, stands at DM 48.9m. Chairman of the Board, Frank H. Asbeck, is delighted with the outcome of the latest share issue, particularly in light of the somewhat depressed sentiment on the stock market. "The strong demand proves that our corporate strategy is widely accepted within the market-place." In total, more than 50 per cent of the share issue was subscribed by 14 so-called Eco Funds as well as institutional investors. A further 200,000 shares went to the Chairman of WGZ-Bank Westdeutsche Genossenschafts-Zentralbank eG on behalf of the company. WGZ-Bank had assisted in the share issue. "These shares are to be seen as 'take-over currency' which we shall be using in July as part of an important strategic take-over," explained the Chairman of the Board. SolarWorld AG is currently negotiating with Bayer Solar GmbH, Freiberg, regarding a possible acquisition. Bayer Solar is the world's leading manufacturer of silicon wafers, a key segment within the solar energy industry. In addition, SolarWorld AG has reported an excellent performance for the six months of fiscal year 2000. Revenues have grown by 328 per cent compared with the same period last year. Frank H. Asbeck, Chairman of the Board, has announced that the interim report covering the company's performance in the first six months of 2000 is to be published soon. SolarWorld AG's operating activities within the strategic business unit of photovoltaics are centred around the production, marketing and distribution of solar modules and components used for the construction of solar power plants.
