This substantial expansion in business activity was achieved mainly through volume increases and only to a minor extent through higher prices. In regional terms, the increase in sales in Germany was particularly strong; as a result of the targeted build-up of the market, earnings rose by 161% to EUR 9.5 million to represent 12% of total group sales. The Hungarian subsidiary was also able to increase turnover by more than 161%. In Austria, earnings revenue increased by 12.1% to EUR 70.5 million. At EUR 6.8 million, the operating profit (EBIT) is 18,1% below the comparable value for the previous year. This is due to increases in personnel costs. The profit on ordinary activities, at EUR 8.7 million, was up slightly on the previous year. Overall, BEKO was able to increase its after-tax profit for the 1999 financial year by 39.3% by comparison with 1998, to EUR 7.7 million (previous year: EUR 5.4 million). As a result of the stock exchange offering, liquid funds increased from EUR 6.3 million to EUR 60.9 million. These funds have been invested in the short term and are available for further acquisitions. During the 1999 financial year, BEKO's equity capital increased by EUR 62.6 million, from EUR 11.5 million to EUR 74.1 million. As a result, the ratio of equity to total assets at 31 December 1999 was 76%. The cashflow from the result was improved by EUR 1.5 million or 17.3% against the previous year, from EUR 8.6 million to EUR 10.0 million. As a strategic holding company, BEKO aims for a balanced mix of majority and minority participations in independently operating entities, on the following principle: the closer to core competence, the higher the participation. Large numbers of companies are adopting the trend to outsource their IT provision, particularly their computer centres and software development. Project management and business process management also form part of software development. There will be increasing demand for BEKO services in these two areas in the coming years, as many companies will be investing more in the development of new applications now that the Y2K problem has been solved and the euro has been introduced. The strategic orientation of IT services will be further reinforced and expanded with consultancy services in the areas of project management, e-commerce, business process management and SAP (standard business software). BEKO's declared aim is to penetrate still further into the consultancy market and to offer total solutions. BEKO can expect further disproportionately strong growth in the consultancy area in the coming years, particularly in the area of Electronic Business Applications. Through cooperation agreements with leading hardware and software manufacturers such as SAP, SUN Microsystems and IBM and strategic partnerships, BEKO will establish itself in the market as a supplier of total solutions.
