By March 31, 2000 sales revenues had reached DM 42.4 million (1st quarter 1999: DM 22.4 million),showing an increase of 89.5 percent. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) rose from DM 2.8 million to DM 8.6 million. This represents an increase of 205 percent. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose more than fivefold in the first three months to DM 5.2 million (1st quarter 1999: DM 0.8 million). Thus the company has increased the EBIT margin from 4 percent to 12 percent. Balda has also scaled up its sales forecast for fiscal 2000 in toto by about 15 percent. As a reason for this the Managing Board gave the good results in the 1st quarter of 2000, and in particular the acquisition of two new customers and additional orders from Ericsson. Sales revenues will rise by DM 30 million from the planned figure of DM 213 million to DM 243 million. The manufacturer's sales of mobile telephone housings are thus expected to rise by over 100 percent in 2000, as they did in 1999. Balda's Managing Board also announced that, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding, it was about to acquire 90 percent of the shares in Formenbau Lüdenscheid GmbH. The purchase price is about DM 3.5 million. Formenbau Lüdenscheid, part of the mould-making and tool- manufacturing group of the same name, achieved sales of around DM 8 million in 1999. The tool- and mould-manufacturing company employs over 50 highly qualified toolmakers and design engineers out of a total workforce of 60. According to the Balda Managing Board, the integration of these specialists in the Group will be an important step toward the planned expansion of its production capacities and the attainment of its expansion targets. The measures taken in 2000 will only feature in Balda's sales figures for 2001. For the first time the Eastern Westphalian company has received an order from the Japanese Sanyo Group. The second new company is a British company specializing in electronic components. In addition, the company has received additional orders from Ericsson. Balda manufactures special in mould foiling for the Swedish telecommunications specialist. These are colored covers that adorn the housing of mobile telephones. These orders show for the first time that Balda's product range covers practically all the plastic components of a mobile telephone, both internal and external.
